Legal Warranty in France 2026 – Garantie légale
French law provides a 2-year legal guarantee of conformity (garantie légale) for all new consumer goods, plus a 6-month presumption favouring the buyer for defects.
6-month presumption
For goods sold since March 2022, any defect appearing within 6 months is presumed to have existed at delivery unless the seller proves otherwise.
Garantie légale vs garantie commerciale
The legal guarantee is automatic and free. A commercial guarantee (often from the manufacturer) may extend coverage but cannot reduce legal rights.
Mandatory Warranty Period
Uniform period: 2 years
You may choose between repair or replacement as the primary remedy in many cases.
